Pre/Post Bronchodilator Spirometry
- Skip Certain Medications:
- Don’t use short-acting inhalers for 4-6 hours before the test. (ie. albuterol or medications that are used every 4-6 hours or as needed)
- Don’t use long-acting inhalers for 12 hours before the test. (ie. salmeterol or medications that are used 1-2 times daily
- Avoid anticholinergic inhalers (like tiotropium) for 24 hours before.
- If you’re unsure or have trouble breathing, ask your doctor.

- No Smoking or Vaping:
- Don’t smoke or vape for 24 hours before the test.
- No Caffeine or Heavy Meals:
- Avoid caffeine (like coffee, tea, soda, or chocolate) for 4 hours before the test.
- Don’t eat a big meal 2 hours before, but a light meal is okay.
- Wear Comfortable Clothes:
- Dress in loose, comfortable clothing so you can breathe easily.
- Arrive Early:
- Plan to get to the clinic 10-15 minutes early to check in and relax before the test.
- Bring a List of Medications:
- Bring a list of your medications (including inhalers and over-the-counter meds).
- No Exercise Before:
- Avoid exercise for at least 30 minutes before the test.
- Tell Us If You’re Sick:
- Let the technician know if you’ve been sick recently (like with a cold or fever).
- Follow Any Extra Instructions:
- If your doctor gave you extra instructions, make sure to follow them.
